Western Kosovo (Metohija) offers the region’s most dramatic meeting of sacred architecture and natural grandeur. Based in the atmospheric mountain town of Peć/Peja, you will experience the historic seat of the Serbian Patriarchate, drive deep into the vertical limestone canyon of Rugova, witness Europe's greatest ensemble of medieval frescoes at Visoki Dečani, and stand beside the rushing waters of the White Drin waterfall.

Daily Route & Stops

Day 1: The Patriarchate of Peć & Rugova Gorge

Morning (09:00 – 11:30)

The Patriarchate of Peć

Begin at the historic seat of the Serbian Church. Walk through the four interconnected churches united under Archbishop Danilo's outer portico. View 13th- and 14th-century frescoes, the marble throne of patriarchs, and the ancient 750-year-old mulberry tree in the peaceful nunnery courtyard.

Afternoon (12:00 – 16:30)

Rugova Gorge Scenic Drive & Alpine Lunch

Drive through the 25-kilometer canyon of the Rugova Gorge. Marvel at sheer 1,000-metre cliffs and suspension bridges. Stop in high villages like Kuqishtë or Drelaj for traditional mountain hospitality: warm homemade flia, sheep cheese, and herbal mountain teas.

Evening (17:30 – 21:00)

Peć / Peja Old Town & Bazaar Walk

Return to Peja. Stroll through the historic Ottoman bazaar (Çarshia), admiring traditional wooden shopfronts. Dine on fresh river trout caught in the Bistrica river at a riverside terrace.

Day 2: Visoki Dečani & The White Drin Waterfall

Morning (09:00 – 12:30)

Visoki Dečani Monastery

Drive 16 km south to Visoki Dečani. Present identification at the KFOR checkpoint and enter the quiet chestnut forest compound. Marvel at Fra Vita's Romanesque marble portals and spend two hours exploring the 1,000+ intact Byzantine frescoes covering the interior. Speak with the monks and visit the monastery shop for honey and wine.

Afternoon (13:30 – 16:30)

White Drin Waterfall & Radavc Cave

Drive north past Peja to Radavc village. Walk the wooden boardwalks to the 25-metre waterfall where the White Drin bursts from subterranean springs. Take a guided tour of the illuminated 'Sleeping Beauty' karst cave, followed by grilled trout lunch at a water-mill restaurant.

Planning Advice & Logistical Essentials

Identification: Carry a valid passport or national ID card at all times, mandatory for the KFOR checkpoint at Visoki Dečani.
Vehicle: A standard rental car handles the asphalt roads easily. Mountain roads are well paved but have sharp curves.
Overnight base: Stay in a boutique hotel in central Peja or a riverside alpine lodge at the mouth of Rugova.
